AVANTE publishes empirical, theoretical and methodological research, position papers as well as reviews and critical essays. Research methodologies may be quantitative or qualitative and may use data gathered through historical analysis, surveys, field work, action research, participant observation, content analysis, simulations or experiments. Studies most appropriate for AVANTE are those focusing on issues critical to the field which are discussed in terms of theories or approaches in psychology, pedagogy, management, history, sociology, philosophy leisure studies or dance.

Materials may be submitted to AVANTE in either French or English and, if accepted, will be published in the original language of submission with abstracts in both languages.

In addition to major papers, AVANTE is prepared to publish shorter manuscripts in its special sections.

  • The Research Note section publishes short research papers (15 pages or less) or news about new research methods, research tools, a particular research field, etc.
  • The Book Review section publishes short book reviews (five pages or less).
  • The Viewpoint section publishes short commentaries (15 pages or less) or points of view, personal accounts, poems, etc., on any topic falling within the scope of AVANTE.
  • The Focus section publishes sizable papers (up to 20 pages) on particular topics falling within the scope of the journal. This section may feature a position paper, a keynote address, an essay, a photo or visual essay, a section of a report, and so on.
  • The International Perspective section publishes socially progressive manuscripts reporting non-Canadian research on issues pertaining to areas within the scope of AVANTE.

Guidelines for Authors
In preparing manuscripts (in French or English) for publication in AVANTE, authors should adhere to the guidelines provided in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (4th edition, 1994). Manuscripts (including references, tables and figures) should not exceed 25 pages in length and should be double-spaced including the abstract, block quotations, footnotes, references and tables. Tables, figures and graphs should be clearly labeled and included on separate pages. Manuscripts should be accompanied by an abstract of 100-150 words typed on a separate page. AVANTE will provide a French abstract for each English-language article and an English abstract for each French-language article. Footnotes should be limited in number and should not exceed six lines in length. Authors should submit a separate cover sheet including the title of the manuscript, name of the author(s), institutional affiliation(s), running head, date of submission as well as full mailing address, email address, and telephone and fax numbers of the author who is to receive the galley proofs. The first page of the manuscript should omit the name of the author(s), but include the title of the manuscript. Any clues to the identity of the author(s) should be eliminated from the text.

Three copies of the manuscript should be submitted to the editor. Manuscripts should not be submitted to another journal at the same time. Authors should retain a copy of the manuscript in case of loss in the mail. Manuscripts will not be returned to authors. A blind review process is used to evaluate manuscripts. Manuscripts are assessed by two reviewers, with the review process taking 7-10 weeks. If their work is accepted for publication, authors will be asked to submit their final manuscript on a computer disk. Authors of manuscripts accepted for publication must transfer copyright to CAHPERD.

For any additional information related to the submission of manuscripts, please contact the editor.
