Warren Campbell 1988-1989

A professional in the mould of R. Tait McKenzie, Warren C. Campbell is totally committed to “those ideas, skills and arts that make possible the joy of movement and the thrill of achievement”.  Believing most fervently in the value of physical activity as a critical aspect of human endeavour, Warren has given over 30 years of his life to inspiring, developing, improving, and supporting physical education programs.  His work with the Scarborough Board of Education has left an indelible impact.  Thousands of children and hundreds of teachers have benefited from his vision, creativity, wisdom and love.  Physical education programmes in Scarborough are some of the best in the country, and that is due in no small measure to Warren Campbell.

Scarborough’s respect for Warren is not limited to the school system.  In 1989, The Scarborough General Hospital named a valuable new facility “The Warren Campbell Sports Medicine Clinic,” in recognition of Warren’s substantial contribution to health, physical education and amateur sport programs, and to the general ‘quality of life’ of the citizens of Scarborough.

This special award was preceded by many others: a Provincial Fitness Citation from the Province of Ontario, the Pete Beach Award for school athletics, a Recognition Award from the Ontario Lung Association, provincial and national recognition awards from the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association and OPHEA’s Bing Caswell Award.

Warren has offered innumerable hours of his time serving in professional organizations: President of CAHPER, Chairman of CAHPER’s first management committee for “Quality Daily Physical Education”, Founding member of CIRA, Executive member of OASPHE, Workshop conductor for OCLEA, Executive member of OPHEA – the list goes on.  When Warren tales on a role, he commits to its totally.  Members of his committee watched with awe and admiration when he served the programme for CAHPER’s 50th anniversary conference – one of the most comprehensive and quality programmes of its kind.

“Catch a Kid Being Good”, a title of one of Warren’s many presentations across the province and country, epitomizes Warren’s genuine humanity.  A caring sensitive man whose greatest pride was to watch two sons graduate from university, he is known and loved by his family, his students, his friends, his colleagues and all who are lucky enough to know him.  He is worthy recipient of the R. Tait McKenzie Award of Honour.
