Dave Turkington 1987-1988

The fact that David Turkington, a born-and-bred British Columbian, should be standing before this audience of his professional peers in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to received an Award of Honour, simply illustrates the cross-Canada impact he has made on physical education.  His leadership in our field has been felt in every region through his many workshops and the research studies he has conducted on teaching methodology.

Born in Vancouver, David obtained his professional preparation in physical education via a swimming scholarship at Washington State University, where he completed his doctorate in education administration in 1977.  he has taught physical education at all levels and has held a number of supervisory and administrative positions in the school systems in British Columbia.  He joined the staff of the School of Physical Education at the University of Victoria in 1979 and became Director of the School in 1988.

Throughout his career, David has been active in learned and professional societies, holding executive positions in a number of organizations: President of CAHPER in 187/88, founding member and President of the Physical Education Society of British Columbia and President of B.C. Physical Education Teachers’ Association.  He has been extremely active at the international level as well with papers presented at an international congress on the teaching of team sports held in Rome, Italy, in 1985, and at World Congresses of the Fédération Internationale d’Éducation Physique (FIEP).  He is a member of the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee and will be presenting a paper at the 1990 Commonwealth Conference in New Zealand.

Possessing exceptional athletic skill himself, David has been most generous in sharing his knowledge and ability with youngsters at the community and school levels, where he has coached in swimming, track and field, basketball, volleyball and soccer.  In addition to his hands-on involvement in these sports at the local level, he has spread his influence further afield through his production of instructional videotape packages and films for basketball, volleyball and track and field.  These teaching aids, together with the countless number of books, monographs and curriculum guides that David has authored have provided immeasurable assistance to teachers of physical education.  He has also conducted workshops in school physical education from Victoria to Newfoundland.

David Turkington personifies all that is valued in the outreach of the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation.  He has been, and continues to be an outstanding ambassador for our association, both nationally and abroad.  He looks forward to and works toward a bigger and better future for all those involved as learners and teachers or coaches in health, physical education, recreation, sport and dance.  He is a giver, a mover, a shaker, and , above all, a doer.  Who could be better qualified to receive the R. Tait McKenzie Award of Honour of CAHPER than David Turkington?
