Daniel Soucie 1986-1987

Dan Soucie: writer, scholar, teacher, humanitarian, physical education professional par excellence.  This quintessential Canadian hails from our nation’s capital, is equally at home in both languages, loved the land, in sensitive to the foibles of human nature, works 25 years a day and is supreme in the art of compromise.

Dan became CAHPER president immediately following a strategic planning process, and no one worked harder to implement those plans and to enhance CAHPER’s profile nationally and locally.  He traveled back and forth across this country, often at his own expense, to deliver the message, to help teachers implement “Quality Daily Physical Education’.  He worked creatively and diligently with teachers and teacher organizations to encourage the professional growth of individuals and to provide superior physical education programmes for children.

He has served CAHPER in countless other ways too numerous to mention here, and he continues to serve the association as an advisory and mentor, generously offering his time and expertise wherever they are needed.  He is a man with a vision for CAHPER… and he is a man of action.

The focus of Dan’s university endeavours is sport administration.  He serves as full professor and Associate Dean at the University of Ottawa, which has been blessed with his presence for many years.  Presentations at conferences are a common occurrence.  He is a prolific scholar in both French and English.  He has written to increase the body of knowledge and to promote the improvement of administrative structures to deliver more effective programmes.  His writings reflect his high profile and his stature as a respected ambassador for the values and traditions of our profession.

R. Tait McKenzie was constantly aware that life is an individual experience and all his work reflects an ongoing concern for other people.  This awareness of the ‘other’ is a hallmark of Dan Soucie.  He is consummately concerned with colleagues, with friends, with family, and is a dedicated passionate professional.  He is eminently qualified to receive the R. Tait McKenzie Award of Honour.
