Virtual Hall of Fame
It is a very rare person who has performed with exceptional dedication and
talent at all levels of the spectrum of education. Such a person is Norman William West. Norm graduated with a degree in Physical and Health Education from the University of Toronto in 1950, and began teaching at the secondary school level. Subsequently, he served as a Department Head at both Junior and Senior High Schools, joining the staff of the University of Toronto Schools, became an Associate Professor at McMaster University and, in 1965, was invited to be Professor and Chairman of Physical and Health Education at the new Althouse College of Education, London, Ontario. Here he was responsible for initiating many new and innovative ideas in teacher education. When the College became a Faculty of the University of Western Ontario, Norm then added work with graduate students in the Faculty of Physical Education to his portfolio of activity.
Norm’s major interest in the 1960’s gradually moved to Health Education and in 1966, he co-authored two widely-used texts in Health Education. He has published many articles and presented numerous workshops on health-related topics and, in 1976, completed a Ph.D. in Health Education at Ohio State University.
Norm West was a major force behind the restructuring of numerous small departments of the Faulty of Education into one large Division of Curriculum Studies. His leadership style and dedication were recognized by his colleagues when they selected him as the first Chairman of the new Division. He is also a major contributor to the Exemplary Physical Education Centre, Faculty of Education, which focuses on materials, implementation and the leadership components of curriculum development.
CAHPER has been fortunate to have been a recipient of Norm’s services for many years: as Vice-President for Health Education from 1967-69, and in 1978, as Chairman of the newly-organized Health Committee. In 1981-82 he was named President of CAHPER and again this year he is active as co-chairman of CAHPER ’85.
Norm was recognized as an exemplary educator and leader early in his career. He was a member of the staff of the Ontario Athletic Leadership Camp; President of the Physical Education Section of the Ontario Education Association; and an Ontario Red Cross Water Safety Supervisor. In 1967, he received the ‘Distinguished Contribution to the Profession’ Award form the Physical Education Section. Norm’s services have not been limited to the formal educational field. He was a group leader with “Operation Crossroads Africa” in Tanzania in 1967 and he is currently on the board of directors of The Mission Services, London, Ontario.
Tonight we honour a congenial colleague, a tireless worker, a clear-minded leader who has a positive effect on all who have the good fortune to make his acquaintance – Norman William West.
