Robert P. Hillier 1980-1981
Robert Hillier was born
a Newfoundlander and became a Canadian citizen in 1949 when Newfoundland
joined Confederation. He began his career as a Recreation
and Physical Education specialist with the Royal Canadian Air Force,
an experience which led to Memorial University where he received
a Bachelor of Physical Education, a Bachelor of Education and a
Master's degree in Physical Educational Administration. He
served as a physical education instructor at the College of Trades
and Technology in St. John's and then became Executive Secretary
of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Federation. In 1976,
Bob was appointed Assistant Director of Recreation and Sports Services
with the Newfoundland Department of Rehabilitation and Recreation
and, in 1982, he was named Director of Community Recreation, Sport
and Fitness Development in the Newfoundland Department of Culture,
Recreation and Youth.
Bob Hillier's dedication
to his profession has gained the respect of his colleagues both
at home and across Canada. Tangible recognition of his dedication
includes the YM-YWCA Service to Youth Award, the Atlantic Provinces
Health, Physical Education and Recreation Honour Award, and the Newfoundland
Teachers' Association Physical Education Council. He is also chairman
of the Interprovincial Sport and Recreation Council Fitness Committee
and co-chairman of the Interprovincial and National Agency Fitness
Committee which has developed Standards and Guidelines for Fitness
Instructors across Canada.
Bob Hillier's involvement
with CAHPER at the National level began with his election as the
Newfoundland representative to the CAHPER Board of Directors, following
which he served as Vice-President of Finance. In 1980, he
was instrumental in bringing the CAHPER Conference to Newfoundland
for the first time. In the same year, he was elected National
President of CAHPER. During his presidency, he ably represented
CAHPER across Canada as well as in the United States and Australia.
Bob, the dedicated father
of two children, has worked closely with the Home and School Association
in Newfoundland, including one term as a local President.
He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the St. John's
YM-YWCA Board of Directors for many years and is currently Public
Relations Chairman. His active contributions to his community
church, to the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts Association, and to the
Rotary Club's work with handicapped children attest to the breath
of his involvement.
Bob's many friends recognize
him as a true blue Newfoundlander and a dedicated Canadian.
We salute Robert P. Hillier as an outstanding educator, leader and
exemplary citizen. His commitment to our profession is an
inspiration and we honour him for that commitment.
