Audrey Bayles-Hester 1977-1979
Audrey Bayles is a leader in her relatively short professional career her leadership achievements as a teacher, inspector and program consultant have established a standard few could match. While serving as a secondary school teacher and later as Health and Physical Education Department Head in her home town of Ault Ste Marie, she managed, in spite of a heavy teaching load, to make time to serve as a coach, sports convenor and training official. This drive, skill and leadership ability was quickly recognized at the professional level. For the past fourteen years she has served in a number of responsible capacities with the Ontario Ministry of Education; as a valued staff member and assistant girls’ camp director for the nationally acclaimed Ontario Athletic Leadership Camp; as a new curriculum development adviser for the Minister; and as Chairperson of a number of Ministry-initiated special studies.
All these noteworthy accomplishments
notwithstanding, it has been Audrey's unmatched record of leadership
in our National professional association, CAHPER, that unquestionably
makes her deserving of this honour. For eight years she was
a member of the Executive Committee of the National Board of Directors
serving as Vice-President for physical education (women); Vice-President
for membership; President-Elect; National President for two years,
and finally, in a most active way, Past President. Truly an
impressive record!
During these years of service to our profession Audrey has accomplished many distinguished achievements but it was during her two years as national President that her leadership abilities really excelled. CAHPER's membership reached an all time high; government relations were excellent; the bold and successful Liaison Membership project was launched; committees were strengthened, with most exceeding their past levels of achievement and membership; and, through the development of the Trust Fund, CAHPER achieved financial stability which it had never previously known.

Leadership has been defined as the ability to establish and launch a creative atmosphere in which people are motivated to move toward the successful achievement of their goals. That is the quality of leadership Audrey Bayles has continuously provided her profession and this Association.
Many of us have known Audrey as a leader, but there are others who know her as a kind, thoughtful and loyal friend. Always prepared to do more than her share and to lead the way with bold and daring vision, she has surely been cast in the mould of the great physical educators who have preceded her.

NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT, NOT OPT OUT!
The first half of International Women’s Year has passed. Canadians
are being made aware of the world-wide thrust that has been put
forward to focus on the role of women in society. Equal opportunity,
equal rights and equal pay have been themes familiar to women in
CAHPER and women in physical education, for many years. The international
call is not solely for society or a profession to do something for
women but, more importantly for women to take the opportunity to
do something for girls and women themselves, and thus improve society
in general. Download
