Virtual Hall of Fame
About the middle of this century, there appeared on the California coast a dynamic, young Australian highly skilled in the field of teaching. His talents and energy found some degree of fulfillment as he achieved his Doctor’s degree in education and numerous athletic awards from University of California at Berkeley. Physical education, sport, recreation, publishing firms, students and colleagues, throughout the length and breadth of our country, have felt the positive impact of this prolific, energetic and dedicated man.
Space will not permit a full recording of the outstanding accomplishments of Max Howell, as a member of the faculty of both the University of British Columbia and the University of Alberta, as a fellow of the American Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, as a member of our constitution and membership categories committees, of the Parks and Recreation Brief Study, the Canadian Medical Association- Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Coordinating Committee and as past president of our Association.
Dr. Howell is presently Director of Research at the largest graduate school in physical education in Canada- where over $100,000.00 in Federal Government Research Grants for fitness studies has been made in the past two years.
His writings and speeches are well known and respected in professional circles around the world. In addition to his teaching, individual counseling and research, writing and speaking engagements (both at home and abroad). Max has found time to be active in sport as a competitor and as a leader. The leadership has been appreciated by local and provincial organizations such as the British Columbia Red Cross Society and the Edmonton Recreation Advisory Council. He has served his profession with a brilliance rarely matched in this or any other field of education.
